Pukehina SR Junior Surf

Our Pukehina SR Junior Surf for 4-13 year olds meets at the beach each Sunday during the summer, at 9.30am

Nip Nips, Under 7s: Approx. 11.00am
Nippers and Rookies, Under 8s – Under 14s: Approx. 11.30am to 12.00pm

Parents are encouraged to participate in the activities and help ensure we have a ratio of 1 adult to 5 children for their water activities.

We aim to foster water confidence and awareness while building technical abilities when handling surf craft (boogie boards, malibu boards).

We promote the development of water rescue techniques through increasing knowledge of surf conditions, use of rescue boards/ tubes & fins and being able to assess risk factors before going into the water.

Sausage sizzle and drinks are available for purchase on Sundays from midday. Junior surf families assist with the BBQ roster at least throughout the season – full training provided.

Swim Training

Swim training is available twice a week to develop water confidence and fitness and is held at the Pongakawa School Pool on Sunday mornings when it is your age groups turn from 10:30am (parental supervision required) and lessons on Wednesday nights as follows:

Nip Nips, Under 7s: 5:30 – 6.00pm
All others: 6.00 – 7.00pm

Training Opportunities

We have many opportunities to train, which are open to members who want to get fit. Come to as many sessions as you like.

Pukehina Junior Surf actively encourages parent helpers to assist with our land and water based activities and will give training for all parents who wish to help out.

Water activities require at least one adult helper for a group of five children so it is imperative we meet these ratios. If we do not meet the water-based ratios then activities may be called off for safety reasons.

There will be qualified lifeguards at all Junior Surf days to assist with ratios as well. Our success is based on adult/parent active support. So, please be willing to get "in the moana/sea" when our coaches call for your help, thank you!"

Five safety guidelines that participants must follow at all times when in the water:

  1. Have an adult watch over you
  2. Stay between the flags
  3. Know your limits
  4. Never swim or surf alone
  5. If in doubt, stay out!

Pukehina Surf Rescue is always interested in hearing from people wanting to volunteer. We welcome all enquiries
